What We Do
Together for a good life—this is the motto that guides IG Metall’s goals and work. It best sums up what defines us as a union.
A good life includes good work, because it is a defining part of our lives. Working together to ensure better conditions means greater financial security, greater justice, and thus greater self-determination for each and every individual.
A good life also includes time—time for oneself and for the things one enjoys doing. Time for friends, for family, for social engagement, or for one’s own professional development. Time for what matters.
To achieve this, we need strong organization and the commitment of many. Nothing is handed to us on a silver platter. Whether it’s secure jobs, fair wages and salaries, greater worker participation, the right to training and career advancement, work schedules that fit our lives, or a flexible transition to retirement under adequate conditions—none of this can be taken for granted.
That is why well-organized workforces and competent works councils fight every day for greater participation, justice, and democracy.
We are strong
Not everything can be resolved within the workplace. Much depends on broader social conditions. As IG Metall, we advocate for a society in which justice, equality, solidarity, freedom, dignity, recognition, and respect are taken for granted. For a society with a social, democratic, and ecological economic order that offers all people a fair working and living environment.
Our solidarity gives us strength. This principle makes us strong. And every member makes us stronger. That’s why: You’re always welcome to join us—become a union member and you’ll be in good company.
