The World Cup is about to start. For many, this is a time when discussions about players, teams, and the tournament’s progress take up a large part of their daily lives. It’s also the number one topic of conversation at work. Many matches kick off in the evening—perfect for anyone who wants to relax in front of the TV and cheer on their team after work. Two out of three of the German national team’s group stage matches will even take place on weekend evenings. It’s more difficult for shift workers: there’s no entitlement to a different shift just to watch a game. But the works council can work with management to find soccer-friendly solutions, such as flexible work hours or special arrangements during the World Cup, for example through a company agreement.
Swapping Shifts
Shift-swapping platforms are also popular: soccer fans swap shifts with colleagues for whom the World Cup is less important—fair and straightforward. However, the basic rule is: arrive at work on time, don’t leave early, and don’t simply extend your breaks. Deviations are only permitted with the employer’s consent; otherwise, you risk receiving a written warning.
Soccer Fever at Work
Watching soccer while at work is generally not allowed. The employer may grant exceptions, but is not required to do so. Company computers and the internet are work tools and are generally off-limits for personal streaming. It is, however, permitted to catch a glimpse of the game during a break—for example, on your personal smartphone via the cellular network. Even if your boss allows you to watch soccer: It remains personal time and is not work time that’s being missed; any missed work must be made up. If you at least want to hear how the game is going, you have a good chance: If listening to the radio is otherwise permitted, it’s also allowed during the World Cup—as long as the work is done with focus and care.
A jersey instead of work clothes?
Public viewings at work can boost team spirit, but must be coordinated with the employer in advance. Flags, decorations, and changes to the workspace are subject to the employer’s house rules. Alcohol in the workplace remains off-limits, and the same applies to attire: jerseys are fine, provided there are no objections—such as customer contact or safety regulations.
