The First Chair, the Second Chair, the Chief Treasurer, four additional executive board members, and 29 volunteer board members—this is the composition of the IG Metall Executive Board.
All Executive Board members are elected at the Regular Union Convention. The election of the executive members of the Executive Board takes place by secret ballot.
Who nominates the candidates?
The incumbent Executive Board submits its nominations for the first and second chairs, the chief treasurer, and the remaining executive board members to the delegates at the union convention.
In addition, the delegates may each nominate additional candidates. The nominees are given the opportunity to introduce themselves to those present.
The volunteer Executive Board members are nominated to the Union Congress by the districts—specifically, by thedelegates elected in eachdistrict for the Union Congress. According tothe bylaws, only IG Metall members with at least 60 months of uninterrupted union membership and who have paid dues in accordance with the bylaws during that time are eligible for election.
How are elections conducted?
The First Chair, the Second Chair, and the Chief Treasurer are elected by secret ballot in separate rounds of voting. The remaining executive board members are also elected by secret ballot, but in a single round of voting.
Duties of the Executive Board
According tothe bylaws, the Executive Board represents IG Metall both internally and externally. It is obligated to conscientiously safeguard the interests of the union. The Executive Board must ensure compliance with the bylaws and implement the resolutions of the Union Congress and the Advisory Board. In addition, after review, it decides on the termination of collective bargaining agreements, strike ballots, and work stoppages.
By-elections
Should by-elections to the Executive Board become necessary between two regular Union Congresses, these are conducted by the Advisory Board. For this purpose, the Advisory Board may also decide to convene an extraordinary Union Congress.
The Advisory Board is the highest decision-making body between Union Conventions. Its members are elected at the first regular district conferences following the entry into force of the bylaws adopted at the last Union Convention.
