IG Metall offers five different training programs:
1. The Trainee Program
2. Entry-level and support programs
3. Training and continuing education for employees
4. Leadership skills and leadership development
5. Individual staff development initiatives
1. Trainee Program – Training to Become a Union Secretary
Young women and men can complete a twelve-month trainee program at IG Metall—providing a solid foundation for their future work as a union secretary.
2. Entry-Level and Support Programs
Additional entry-level and support programs assist employees in their individual professional development.
“Young Activists” – Staff Development for Volunteers:
Young activists in workplaces can gain targeted qualifications and develop their skills through IG Metall for their volunteer union work. The training typically consists of four modules and is suitable for potential future full-time employment at IG Metall.
“Young Full-Time Staff” Training Program:
Newly hired administrative staff are familiarized with the processes, structures, and specific conditions of IG Metall as a political organization through a three-week orientation program.
Member-Oriented Office Management: IG Metall offers administrative staff a range of training programs for efficient and member-oriented office management.
3. Training and Continuing Education for Employees
IG Metall employees have the opportunity to continuously develop their skills and competencies. The seminar program includes approximately 120 training opportunities each year on topics related to organizational, labor union, and socio-political issues.
4. Leadership Skills and Developing Leaders
IG Metall supports its employees with targeted training programs to prepare them for leadership roles and also offers part-time training options.
Employees can prepare for their future roles in management positions or elected offices. The leadership development program consists of four modules. These focus on both personal development and personnel management. The program also covers participatory workplace and collective bargaining policies, as well as the political influence exerted by IG Metall leaders.
This program is supplemented by leadership development opportunities. Managing directors newly elected to an IG Metall administrative office must complete basic training on their new role and on personnel management.
Building on this, IG Metall offers the seminar series “Leading in Change Processes” as well as training on performance reviews, project management, and health promotion. In addition, there are individual development discussions, leadership workshops, and an accompanying mentoring program.
5. Individual Professional Development
To address specific personal needs and professional requirements, IG Metall organizes training programs and courses in collaboration with external partners. Individual staff development also includes training required for new responsibilities or a change in role.
IG Metall develops and designs professional development programs—sometimes in collaboration with international institutions. Partners include the European Academy of Labor, the Global Labor University, the European Trade Union Institute, and the Heimvolkshochschule Hustedt.
In addition, IG Metall supports studies at the Academy of Labor. Our employees attend the Academy’s work-integrated bachelor’s and master’s degree programs as well as certificate courses. The Academy of Labor’s academic programs are characterized by their employee-oriented and practical focus.
