Employees are legally insured against workplace accidents. The situation is different in private life, where everyone must take care of themselves. Every year, around seven million people are injured in accidents at home or during leisure activities.
In such cases, IG Metall members are protected by leisure accident insurance—at no cost to the member. The insurance coverage is valid worldwide. While it doesn’t alleviate the pain of an accident, it does at least mitigate some of the financial consequences.
Who is eligible, and how much?
You are eligible for benefits under the accident insurance if you have been a member of IG Metall for at least twelve full months and have paid your dues in accordance with the bylaws.
- Accident Hospitalization Benefit ( also known as daily hospitalization allowance): In the event of a hospital stay of at least 48 hours, the insured person receives a one-time payment of up to 30 times the monthly premium, with a maximum of 51.13 euros per day of inpatient treatment. A minimum of 154 euros is paid as a one-time benefit.
- Disability Compensation: In the event of total disability, a one-time compensation payment equal to 500 times the monthly premium is paid; a corresponding partial amount is paid in the event of partial disability of at least 20 percent. For retirees, this disability benefit is only covered if they are employed and pay union dues in accordance with the bylaws.
- Death Benefit: In the event of accidental death, the surviving dependents receive 200 times the monthly contribution.

When does IG Metall’s leisure accident insurance not apply?
For accidents that occur while at work, statutory accident insurance applies. Depending on the industry, the occupational accident insurance associations or accident insurance funds are responsible. This also applies to accidents that occur while traveling directly to or from the workplace.

Affected members should report a leisure-time accident to their local IG Metall office as soon as possible.
