The total cost of a funeral can quickly add up to several thousand euros. Obituary notices, the grave, the funeral service, floral arrangements, the headstone, and grave maintenance—all of these must be paid for.
Statutory health insurance plans removed the so-called death benefit from their list of benefits years ago. Survivors must cover funeral costs on their own. That is why IG Metall provides financial support to its members or their survivors in the event of death. While it does not ease the grief, it at least provides financial relief.
Benefits for Surviving Family Members
If an IG Metall member dies, the surviving family member who paid for the funeral receives financial assistance. The amount depends on the length of membership. Example: The person has been an IG Metall member for 20 years and pays an average monthly dues of 20 euros, which, based on the calculation factor, amounts to 31.5 times that amount. The beneficiary would then receive 630 euros.
Benefits for Members
In the event of the death of a partner, the support amounts to half the standard rates. Using the example above, an IG Metall member would receive 315 euros. Only members are eligible for this support. Claims for death benefits must be submitted to the member’s local IG Metall office within twelve months of the death.
