IG Metall’s Seminar Offerings for Union Representatives Free and expert support

Newly elected union representatives face a lot of questions: How does union work function at the workplace and at the administrative office? What are the responsibilities of union representatives? Where can I find information? What training seminars are available?

IG Metall administrative offices offer introductory seminars (for example, as weekend or one-day events). Information on these is available at the administrative offices. Those who wish to pursue further training will find a wide range of options in IG Metall’s central education program.

Who can participate in the seminars?
All members are eligible to participate in IG Metall seminars. Special seminars are offered for union representatives. Popular topics include communication and conflict resolution in workplace advocacy, information outreach as part of active workplace policy, training series for union representative body leadership, and project management in workplace policy.

Free Participation
IG Metall covers travel expenses, seminar fees, and the costs of lodging and meals for its members attending IG Metall seminars. If time off under the Educational Leave Act is not possible, IG Metall will also compensate for lost wages during the period of leave. These provisions do not apply to seminars under Section 37.6 of the Works Constitution Act (BetrVG) and Section 96.4 of Book IX of the Social Code (SGB IX)

How does time off work?
For many seminars, it is possible to take time offwork under the Educational Leave Act of the federal states (BUG or AwbG/NRW). Information on time-off options and registration is available from the relevant administrative office.
