From October 22 to 26, the 25th Regular Union Congress of IG Metall will take place in Frankfurt am Main. There, the elected delegates will determine the union’s priorities for the next four years andelect the IG Metall Executive Board. The delegates will vote on over 494 policy motions and 39 motions regarding the bylaws.
Shaping the Transformation
Policy motions, key motions, and other motions cover the full spectrum of issues relevant to IG Metall. They range from addressing central societal, social, and economic developments to the critical challenges facing IG Metall in the areas of collective bargaining, workplace relations, and organizational policy.
How can we shape the transformation so that it proceeds in a socially just and democratic manner, with decent work and strong collective bargaining agreements? How do we secure the necessary investments in infrastructure, in new climate-friendly technologies and products, and in education? How can we equip workers with the skills needed for digital work?
And above all: How do we strengthen participation and a voice in the workplace so that we can truly help shape the transformation?
Debate in the Run-up to the Union Congress
Nothing happens at IG Metall without participation. Members are continuously involved in many areas—in every round of collective bargaining, in surveys, and, of course, in the run-up to the union convention. To this end, the IG Metall Executive Board made a debate presentation available this winter. With the help of the ideas it contained regarding the policy and guiding resolutions, members across Germany were able to discuss the resolutions. In this way, they were able to contribute to setting the agenda for the union convention. This feedback has been incorporated into the final versions of the key motions, which the delegates will discuss and vote on.
Election of the Executive Board
One of the highlights of the union convention is the election of the Executive Board. The current First Chair, Jörg Hofmann, as well as the current executive board members Wolfgang Lemb, Ralf Kutzner, and Irene Schulz, are not standing for re-election. In addition, the Executive Board had decided to propose to the union convention that the number of executive board members be reduced from 7 to 5.
The Executive Board has nominated Christiane Benner, currently Second Chair of IG Metall, for the office of First Chair. The Executive Board recommends Jürgen Kerner, currently Chief Treasurer of IG Metall, as Second Chair. According to the Executive Board’s resolution, Nadine Boguslawski, currently Chief Representative at the Stuttgart office, is to succeed him in this role. Executive Board member Hans-Jürgen Urban is nominated for reelection. The proposal designates Ralf Reinstädtler, currently First Representative at the Homburg-Saarpfalz office, as the new executive board member.
