For many students, working is already part of their studies—if only to pay for them.
Advice on topics related to college
Internships, summer jobs, part-time jobs, or federal student aid (BAföG)—when things get way too complicated, students can get advice at one of our local IG Metall offices.
“hib”: The Go-To Resource for Students
In addition, we’re part of the “students at work” advisory network, which is represented on campuses at many universities nationwide. Through university groups, university information offices, and campus offices, we work together with our colleagues from other unions to provide you with expert information right on campus.
The IG Metall University Information Office is also available online. The website features the latest news on studying, internships, and starting a career, as well as useful links, informational brochures, and flyers. You can also access the publication“Die Schnittstelle”there, which is released at the beginning of each semester. Student members of IG Metall receive it as a supplement to the *metallzeitung*.
Legal Advice and Legal Protection for Exam-Related Matters
Through the DGB, IG Metall members receive free legal advice and legal representation in all matters of labor and social security law. Only students who know their rights can confidently assert them during an internship or part-time job. Legal uncertainties often arise, at the latest, during a summer job or internship: When do social security contributions become due? How do I ensure I’m paid the minimum wage? What vacation entitlement do “minijobbers” have? What taxes must be paid? And when are BAföG and child benefits reduced or discontinued?
You can have your employment contracts and job references professionally reviewed by our experts on-site. For student members, there’s also a special benefit provided by our bylaws: legal protection for exam-related matters. We explain here in which cases this applies and exactly who is eligible to use it.
Seminars and Field Trips to Companies
But we don’t just support students with questions about labor law. In addition to informational brochures, we also offer free seminars and events covering topics related to your studies and career. Especially in the shortened course of study through bachelor’s and master’s programs, important additional qualifications are often neglected. With specialized seminars, we aim to give you the opportunity to think beyond the usual scope of your studies, prepare yourself practically for your future career, and better manage your academic workload. This also includes training on learning strategies and field trips to companies.
We have in-depth knowledge of the companies in our industries. Through our contacts, we can provide practical insights into your desired career field. This real-world information helps students navigate their academic path, structure an internship, and eventually enter the workforce. For example, each year we survey starting salaries for college graduates in our industries.
Leisure and Accident Insurance
IG Metall members automatically receive leisure and accident insurance. The coverage is valid worldwide and extends to all accidents occurring outside of work.
The ISIC Card—Free for Members
IG Metall members can apply for the ISIC Card—the International Student Identity Card—free of charge. This card serves as globally accepted proof of student, apprentice, or trainee status. With it, you gain access to many discounts and benefits. When traveling abroad, you can also contact a helpline in case of emergencies. The card is valid for one year from the date of issuance. You can learn more about the ISIC Card and apply for it here.
Scholarships for Active Individuals
The Hans Böckler Foundation offers young, committed individuals the opportunity to pursue higher education: Those who can demonstrate involvement in labor unions or social and political causes may receive up to 649 euros per month to help finance their undergraduate studies or doctoral program. You can find more information here. Experts at the IG Metall university information offices are also available to answer your questions.
