IG Metall Youth has nearly 230,000 members, including more than 82,000 apprentices. This makes it the largest political youth organization in Germany. Together, JAVs, works councils, and we have already achieved a great deal for the rights of apprentices: in terms of the quality of training and collective bargaining benefits. This was only possible through collective action. JAVs and works councils are strong because we establish important framework conditions:
Permanent Employment
In 2012, we fought for and achieved a historic victory: Permanent employment has become the norm in the steel industry as well as in the metal and electrical industries. This means no more endless fixed-term contracts—instead, a permanent job as a rule after successfully passing the apprenticeship exam. It was a long road to get there. With nearly 1,000 actions as part of “Operation Hiring,” the IG Metall Youth achieved permanent employment.
More Pay, More Vacation
We must fight together to secure and implement higher apprenticeship wages. Many youth and apprentice representatives are active members of our union. They ensure that the interests of apprentices play a key role in our collective bargaining demands.
A Good Start to Apprenticeship
Together with the JAV, we ensure that apprentices get off to a good start in their careers: Is the quality of the apprenticeship guaranteed? Does the program provide a broad range of basic skills? Does the apprenticeship lay a solid foundation for further training on the job?
Support for the JAV
When problems arise, the JAV isn’t on its own: advice and assistance are always available from our colleagues at our local offices. They also provide the necessary political backing for the JAV’s work—for example, through their campaigns and numerous regional initiatives. This ensures that the demands of the youth and trainee representatives cannot be ignored.
