Insurance for Apprentices Overview: Which types of insurance are necessary?

Type of Insurance	Need	Explanation
Personal Liability Insurance	*****	Essential for everyone. However, young adults are covered under their parents’ personal liability insurance as long as they are unmarried and are completing their first vocational training. After that, they should take out their own policy immediately.
Statutory Health Insurance	*****	Mandatory coverage begins with your first paycheck. For those in unpaid educational programs (high school students, college students), free coverage through parents with statutory health insurance is possible until your 25th birthday, provided you are still unmarried and have no income exceeding 505 euros (538 euros for a mini-job).
Disability insurance	*****	Very important. It’s cheaper to enroll at a young age than later, once health problems have arisen. Choose a policy with the option for supplementary coverage so that your insurance protection can be expanded later.
Disability Insurance	****	Only for those who cannot take out disability insurance due to cost considerations or who are unable to obtain it because of a high risk of illness.
Automobile Liability Insurance	****	Mandatory for all car owners.
Pet Owner Liability insurance	****	Anyone who owns a dog (or a dangerous animal) should have this.
International Travel Health Insurance	***	Recommended for those with public health insurance who are traveling abroad, because medically necessary repatriation from abroad is not covered by health insurance plans—not even within Europe.
Term life insurance	***	If trainees have children to support.
Home Contents Insurance	**	When setting up a household of some value. If you’re only moving out of your parents’ home temporarily, your household belongings are usually still covered under your parents’ policy.
Accident insurance	*	It’s better to get disability insurance. As a member of IG Metall, you automatically have leisure accident insurance.
Partial Auto Insurance	*	Only for newer cars. For older cars, the insurance premiums are usually too high compared to the car’s residual value.
Comprehensive auto insurance	*	Only for new cars.
Legal Protection Insurance	*	Coverage under any existing family legal protection insurance held by your parents, provided you are still primarily in school and unmarried.  As a member, you automatically have legal protection for labor and social security matters through IG Metall. If you are a member of a tenants’ association, you receive legal protection there for all matters related to tenancy law.
