Setting the Course for Professional Development Abroad
Every year, thousands of apprentices from Germany gain experience in another country. This helps them further their qualifications and also improves their prospects on the job market.
International experience is highly valued by employers—not only at large companies but also at small and medium-sized enterprises. It sets the course for professional development and opens up opportunities beyond Germany. A certificate attests to the skills acquired.
Don’t forget your training log
During the time abroad, the employer continues to pay the trainee’s wages. The employer must report every stay abroad to the relevant chamber and coordinate a training plan with it if the stay lasts longer than four weeks.
The employer must include the time abroad in the training contract. In addition, the employer must have the health insurance provider certify the assignment to the respective country.
The apprentice must apply to the vocational school for an exemption from attendance during the time abroad. Although they are not required to attend vocational school during this period, they should catch up on the missed material on their own. Apprentices abroad must also continue to maintain their report booklet.
Grants and Health Insurance
The apprentice pays for travel and accommodation. Grants are available to help cover these costs, such as through the European vocational training program “Leonardo da Vinci” run by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
In addition, the so-called mobility advisors at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the Chamber of Crafts can assist with questions regarding stays abroad and funding opportunities.
Coverage under German pension, health, long-term care, accident, and liability insurance generally continues within the EU. Our tip: Check with your health insurance provider to find out which benefits are covered in the event of illness abroad. You should also inform your workers’ compensation insurance provider about your time abroad.
