PRESS STATEMENT IG Metall: Young People Need Stable Pensions!

IG Metall’s youth wing criticizes the “Junge Union’s” pension plans announced at its Germany Day event and the threat by individual members of parliament to scuttle the pension package from the coalition agreement, which includes a stabilized pension level.

Svenja Thelen, Federal Youth Secretary of IG Metall, says: “The Junge Union is gambling with the future of young workers. Anyone who undermines the statutory pension system destroys trust and exacerbates poverty in old age. We need security, not cuts—and, finally, solidarity. We demand a sustainable and stable statutory pension insurance system: fairly financed, for everyone, and involving all working people.”

According to IG Metall, the stabilization of pension levels agreed upon in the coalition agreement is particularly necessary for the younger generation and their future pension entitlements.

With approximately 200,000 members up to the age of 27, IG Metall Youth is the largest political youth organization in Germany.
