PRESS STATEMENT VW Works Council Leadership: Generational Transition at the Right Time

Jörg Hofmann, President of IG Metall:

“It’s good that Bernd Osterloh did everything he could to clearly and promptly set the course for his succession at the helm of employee representation, thereby also ushering in a generational change. The timing is right: The transformation at Volkswagen is proceeding in an exemplary manner—precisely because of the strong work of the works council committees led by Bernd Osterloh. His successor, Daniela Cavallo, stands for continuity and, at the same time, for the modernization of co-determination at Volkswagen—of that I am firmly convinced. With Daniela Cavallo, the first woman has been elected to lead the employee representation body of the global Volkswagen Group. This is a clear commitment to diversity. Daniela Cavallo is an intelligent, competent, and dedicated union leader who is deeply rooted in the structures of both the corporation and IG Metall. As deputy chair of the works council, she has already demonstrated her leadership skills and gained valuable experience for her future outstanding role within the corporation.

Bernd Osterloh has repeatedly received offers for top positions at the executive board level in recent years. Now that his own transition has been settled and he knows that co-determination is in the best of hands, he wants to take on a new challenge in a different role. I wish him the best of luck in this endeavor and thank him for his impressive lifetime achievements as an advocate.”
