PRESS STATEMENT EU Commission Falls Short

“Significantly lower energy costs are crucial for jobs and companies in Germany, especially in the industrial sector. We at IG Metall view the European Commission’s move to create better opportunities for a competitive industrial electricity price and to expand electricity price compensation as the right signal. We took to the streets for this, we held talks, and we advocated strongly for it.

However, the measures now presented are not sufficient. The slight increase in electricity price compensation from 75 to 80 percent does not yet provide the necessary relief. In particular, the possibility of double subsidies from both the industrial electricity price and electricity price compensation is absolutely essential and must be implemented. In this respect, today’s decision by the European Commission is a first step in the right direction; further steps must now follow quickly.”
