War, the pandemic, and their consequences present us with major challenges
Shortages in gas and raw material supplies, rising energy prices, the global consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, and disrupted supply chains are hitting Germany—an industrialized nation—particularly hard. These developments can lead to severe economic losses and cause profound social conflicts.
Russia’s attack on Ukraine is also causing enormous economic challenges. There is a threat of a lasting erosion of prosperity in our society. Russia’s strategy also aims to generate fear and create space for populism. This is intended to limit our scope for political action. We want to stand together against this.
Peace, freedom, and democracy require a strong socio-ecological market economy
At the same time, industrial companies and workers are in the midst of an epoch-making transformation toward achieving carbon neutrality and digitalization (the Twin Transition). On the one hand, this poses massive challenges for industry; on the other hand, it presents opportunities for companies and workers.
To this end, we must secure the future of industrial value-creation networks in our country here and now, shape their future, and strengthen the foundations for a socio-ecological market economy. This is in our shared interest, for industry in our country is a crucial foundation for employment, progress, and prosperity—and to a greater extent than in many comparable countries.
We are convinced that environmental responsibility, social justice, financial stability, economic success, and a successful transformation—along with the corresponding investments in a successful, sustainable industry—can only be achieved together. To this end, it is crucial that we preserve social cohesion and develop shared guiding principles.
Let’s Start a Conversation
Social cohesion and dialogue are our shared response to stoked fears and populism. We will launch a dialogue initiative within the Alliance for the Future of Industry. This initiative is based on our proposals titled “Shaping and Securing the Future of Industry Now.”
The goal is to engage in dialogue about the significance and prospects of industrial value creation and the challenges of transformation, and to identify appropriate measures for successfully shaping the transformation process. We intend to conduct a lively dialogue in the fall of 2022 with state and local policymakers, other regional stakeholders—including representatives from social and environmental organizations—as well as the academic community and interested citizens. At the Alliance’s Industry Conference on November 29, we will present the results and coordinate the next steps.
