Neumünster – The employment situation in the industrial valves sector has stabilized in recent years. However, the industry remains under pressure due to its dependence on political decisions—such as those regarding the energy transition—and due to digitalization. The COVID-19 crisis has exacerbated this situation. Industrial valve manufacturers need more well-trained skilled workers to meet the challenges ahead. This is one of the findings of the industry report “Industrial Valves,” which IG Metall has published again—following the 2013 edition—in collaboration with the Hans Böckler Foundation. The report was authored by Sustain Consult. IG Metall is calling on employers and policymakers to strengthen training and continuing education in the industry and to promote workplace co-determination, thereby fostering attractive working conditions.
“Industrial valve manufacturers are an essential part of a functioning water and energy supply system, as well as a central element in the chemical and food industries. This value creation must be strengthened in Germany and Europe,” said Wolfgang Lemb, an executive board member responsible, among other things, for mechanical and plant engineering, during the presentation of the industry report on Tuesday in Neumünster. The industry report identifies a digitalization gap. Consequently, companies need strategies to manage this transformation. “To keep pace, comprehensive investments are needed now. To ensure that SMEs are well-positioned for the future, the government must support research and development,” said Lemb.
In light of the low level of vocational training despite demographic change, Lemb called for action: “To meet the demand for skilled workers and master digitalization with a well-trained workforce, more apprenticeship positions are needed. Recruiting skilled workers and providing regular training must be given higher priority so that the industry is well-positioned for the future.”
With this industry report, IG Metall provides a current, detailed picture of the industrial valve sector in Germany from the employees’ perspective. The report examines the structure and development of the industry and analyzes challenges as well as areas of action for labor representatives. As a central challenge, the report takes an in-depth look at the potential of digitalization. It also discusses value-added perspectives that significantly shape current and future challenges.
From the perspective of the works council members surveyed, technological and demographic change creates an urgent need for action in forward-looking workforce planning and development, as a shift in skill sets will be necessary. Furthermore, employee participation is essential to shape these organizational changes in the best possible way. IG Metall calls on employers to work together with their works council members and IG Metall to address these challenges in the best interests of employees.
